What Is Generative AI? A Simple Explanation for Non-Techies

Generative AI is software that can create new content—text, images, video, music, and code—based on patterns it has learned from enormous amounts of data. When you write to ChatGPT and get an answer, you're using generative AI. When Canva suggests a design, you're using generative AI.

How it actually works—without technical jargon

Think of it as an exceptionally skilled student. AI is trained on billions of texts, images, and videos from the internet. It has learned patterns: how sentences fit together, how images are composed, what typically follows what.

When you give it a task, it predicts the most likely (and hopefully most useful) output based on everything it has learned. It doesn't "understand" the world the way we do—but it's extraordinary at producing output that looks like human-made content.

The three types of generative AI you encounter in everyday life

Text AI (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) writes text based on your instructions. It can create everything from emails to business plans to creative writing.

Image AI (Midjourney, DALL-E, Canva AI) creates images from text descriptions. You describe what you want to see, and AI generates it.

Video AI (Kling, Runway, HeyGen) makes video clips from text or images. Quality has increased dramatically in the past year.

What generative AI is good at

It's exceptional at first drafts, brainstorming, repurposing content, image generation, research and summarization, and automating repetitive tasks.

What it can't do

It doesn't replace your judgment, your taste, your experience, or your authenticity. AI can create a draft—you make it real. It can also make mistakes, invent facts (called "hallucinations"), and produce generic output. That's why editing is always necessary.
